AV Fistula
🩸 AV Fistula (Arteriovenous Fistula)
An AV Fistula is a surgical connection made between an artery and a vein, usually in the arm, to provide vascular access for hemodialysis. It is considered the best and most durable option for patients with chronic kidney failure who need long-term dialysis.
⚙️ How is it created?
A vascular surgeon performs a minor surgery to connect an artery to a nearby vein.
This connection causes the vein to become larger and stronger, making it suitable for repeated needle insertions during dialysis.
Common sites: forearm (radiocephalic fistula) or upper arm (brachiocephalic fistula).
⏱️ Maturation Time:
The fistula takes about 4 to 8 weeks (or longer) to mature and become usable for dialysis.
During this time, the vein enlarges and the blood flow increases.
✅ Advantages of AV Fistula:
Longest lifespan among dialysis access types
Lower risk of infection
Better blood flow, which leads to more effective dialysis
Fewer complications compared to catheters or grafts
